1. Key Result Areas (KRAs)
KRAs are ‘categories of outcomes’ that must be effectively managed
for the organization to develop and maintain its operating culture,
carry out its mission, and arrive at its vision. KRAs are
cross-functional in nature. They provide a framework for balancing the
organization’s focus and resource allocation.
This process will help leaders
• establish the KRAs that will impact the organization’s ability to
realize its vision.
• define success for each KRA as it relates to the organization’s
vision.
• reach consensus regarding the current status (strength or
weakness) of each KRA.
• determine the current priority level of each KRA relative to the
organization’s vision.
2. Critical Objectives (COs)
COs are specific outcomes that must be accomplished for the
organization to arrive at its vision. Collectively, the COs define
success for the organization. They are measurable, actionable, and
clearly aligned with one or more KRA.
This process will help leaders
• develop effective COs.
• align each CO with the KRAs.
• prioritize the COs based on the organization’s vision and the
current status of KRAs.
3. Action Plans (APs)
APs play a very functional and pragmatic role. To this point in the
Spoke & Wheel Planning
Method™, the focus has been on ‘defining success.’ APs turn ‘ideas into
action.’ They lay out the specific steps for the accomplishment of COs.
This process helps leaders
• identify ‘obstacles’ to COs.
• develop ‘strategies’ to overcome each obstacle.
• prioritize strategies based on available resources and
contribution to the vision.
• determine and assign accountability for specific actions to
implement priority strategies.
